Namaste Yoga 128 Ganesh Teaches About Humility with Dr. Melissa West

http://www.melissawest.com This final class in the series of classes on the mythology of Ganesh teaches us about humility. Each of these stories are archetypal and teaches us something about ourselves. In this story, Kubera, the God of wealth, invites Shiva, the God of destruction and his wife Parvarti to dinner in order to show of his riches. Shiva and Parvarti turn down Kuberas invitation and send Ganesh instead. Kubera is a bit wounded and insulted insisting that he could feed thousands of children like Ganesh. Ganesh goes to Kubera's palance and true to his form sits down and eats all the food placed in front of him. As was custom, more and more food is placed in front of Ganesh, as his appetite seems to be insatiable! Ganesh eats and eats until there was no more food to be found and Kubera is forced to send his troops to find food from surrounding villages. Ganesh was still very hungry and actually began to eat all the furniture. Kubera became very frightened! Ganesha told Kubera, "You promised my parents you would feed me! Now I have to eat you up as I am still very hungry!" Kubera ran away and pleaded with Shiva to save him from Ganesha. Shiva advised Kubera to give up his pride and serve Ganesha a simple handful of rice. Kubera went back to his palace. Ganesha's stomach had become very huge, but the child as still hungry. When Kuberay served a cup of rice, with humility, Ganesha's hunger was indeed satisfied. This story teaches us that a handful of rice given with love and eaten with love is more important and filling than all the wealth of Kuvera flaunted to impress the world and all the Gods. In today's class we will practice humility with half moon balancing pose and triangle pose. We will also practice turning inwards and listening to the messages of our own bodies and following our breath. This class offers and opportunity to open your hips, a "humble" yet extremely effective backbend called sphynx pose that should be a counter pose to life, as well as Kubera mudra.
